VIDALIA — Jaquan Wilson did his best impersonation of older brother and Vidalia High School basketball standout Julius Wilson in Vidalia Junior High’s 50-19 win against Cathedral Tuesday night.

Wilson scored 22 of his team’s 50 points and recorded multiple steals and assists.

“Wilson is a hand,” Vidalia coach Bernie Cooley said. “He can really get after it.”

Both teams started slow, as they played to a 6-6 tie after the first quarter. Things heated up, however, in the second quarter with both teams seeing success on the offensive end.

Vidalia would take a 16-14 lead into halftime.

The Vikings would take over in the second-half, though, thanks to pressure defense.

“Cathedral always has good philosophy and fundamentals,” Cooley said. “We made a couple adjustments at halftime to help penetrate the lane and develop some openings. The kids started playing, and we came back and got it.”

Vidalia held Cathedral to just five second half points, while racking up 17 points in both the third and fourth quarter themselves.

“I’ve got a special group this year,” Cooley said. “They are getting after it and playing hard.”

Cooley said it was also nice to see kids play at this age, because he said he knows one day they will be shining in high school.

“It is always nice to see young talent coming up,” he said. “They are still learning the game, but it is great to see them develop, and from our standpoint, it is great to see them develop here and then get to go see them at the high school.”

Ray J. Ransom chipped in with 13 points for Vidalia, and Devin Green added five points.

Jones Richardson was the leading scorer for Cathedral with seven points.
