FERRIDAY — For the first time since 2010, the Ferriday Trojans will host a playoff game.

As the No. 16 seed, the (5-5) Trojans will host No. 17 (3-7) West St. John.

“They’re a spread team,” Ferriday head coach Dwight Woods said. “They throw the ball a lot. They have two big receivers they look to throw to.”

Woods believes he can get enough of a push from his defensive line to disrupt West St. John’s passing attack Friday, but a lot of that will depend on the health of defensive end Dantrieze Scott, who left in the first quarter with an ankle sprain against Ouachita Christian School last week.

“With Dantrieze, it’s going to be a game-time decision,” Woods said. “He’s still in pain. We expect him to play. It wouldn’t do any damage, but it’s all about how much pain he can deal with. It’s unusual because he sprained both ankles.”

Linebacker Lewis Matthews, who is one of the team’s leading tacklers, is dealing with an injury, as well.

Athlete versus athlete, Woods believes West St. John has enough to compete against the Trojans Friday night, but he looks for his team to hold an advantage in the trenches.

“I think we’ll be able to generate that pass rush, and I also think our offensive line will be a little bit better than their defensive front,” Woods said. “They have some great skill people, and we have an even matchup there. Our offensive line and defensive line should be the difference.”

The Trojans will look to get out of the first round of the playoffs this Friday at 7 p.m. at Melz Field.
