NATCHEZ — A South Carolina fugitive spotted in Adams County Friday and chased by law enforcement officers overnight was captured Saturday morning at a Deerfield Road residence in the Kingston area.
Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Michael Covington, 24, who is wanted in South Carolina for attempted murder and kidnapping, when they responded to a call from a Kingston resident who said Covington was in her house, ACSO spokeswoman Courtney Taylor said.
The resident allowed Covington to use the phone after the fugitive said he had grown up in the area and could name some of the places in the area. When he came into her house carrying a baseball bat, the resident recognized Covington from pictures she had seen on news reports.
Her two small children and nephew were also in the house at the time, Taylor said.
The woman then went outside to call the sheriff’s office at 9:56 a.m. Taylor said dispatchers told the resident to get her children out of the house and wait for deputies to arrive.
Covington was arrested inside the residence without incident at 10:13 a.m.
The sheriff’s office had been patrolling the Kingston area after receiving several calls about a suspicious black male in the area Saturday morning, Taylor said. Before the arrest, a deputy had previously spotted Covington carrying a baseball bat and a jug in the Kingston area.
After the deputy attempted to get close enough to use his Taser, Covington took off running, jumped a fence, crossed a pasture and escaped into the woods. At that time the deputy called for backup and called the Natchez Police Department’s K-9 unit to help track the man.
Covington was booked on charges of fugitive from justice and will be extradited to Cherokee County, S.C.
