Natchez Democrat Top Five

The top five has proven to be pretty topsy-turvey so far this season, and last week was no exception. Two teams in the rankings suffered defeat while another team won to earn its way onto the list. Will there be lots of shakeup again this week? Only time will tell.

1. Trinity Episcopal (4-0)

Last week: defeated Alpha Christian 48-0

Tonight’s game: at Porter’s Chapel

Why ranked here: The Trinity train keeps steaming down the track, as the Saints ran over Alpha Christian last week with ease. The defense came up big, as they allowed less than 100 yards of total offense. Trinity hits the road for the first time in three weeks, as they travel to Vicksburg to take on Porter’s Chapel tonight.

2. Ferriday (1-1)

Last week: defeated Block 20-6

Tonight’s game: at Vidalia

Why ranked here: It may seem that we have the Trojans ranked too high as they only have a 1-1 record. But their strength of schedule is what has them in this spot. Ferriday only lost by six points to Natchez, a school four classifications above them, and then easily defeated Block, which was ranked No. 2 in last week’s poll. Ferriday deserves this spot.

3. Centreville (3-1)

Last week: defeated Silliman 21-0

Tonight’s game: at Amite School Center

Why ranked here: After losing their first game, the Tigers have won three in a row to remind everyone that they are the two-time defending MAIS Class AA state champions. However, coaches still are not satisfied with Centreville’s performance after the team slopped through an ugly victory in the rain last week. Tonight’s game should be a cakewalk for the Tigers against an overmatched ASC team.

4. Natchez High (3-1)

Last week: lost to Warren Central 26-23

Tonight’s game: open

Why ranked here: After opening the season with three wins against smaller schools, Natchez failed its first test against a school its size, falling to Class 6A Warren Central on homecoming. Natchez takes a break this week before getting into region play next week against No. 2 ranked Meridian.

5. Adams County Christian (3-1)

Last week: defeated WCCA 28-21

Tonight’s game: at Prairie View

Why ranked here: After starting the season with just one win in their last 23 games, the Rebels have earned their way into the rankings with a great start to their season. Last week’s win was huge, as it put them at 1-0 in District 5-AA. Tonight’s game is also a big test for ACCS, as they go on a long road trip. The next few weeks will prove if the Rebels are for real.
