NATCHEZ — The Cathedral Green Wave and Trinity Saints boys cross country teams each finished second in the Mississippi Association of Independent School State Cross Country Meet Monday.

In MAIS AAA, Cathedral scored a 67, four behind Kirk Academy, who finished with a 63. Columbia was right behind Cathedral with a 68 in a tight boys race.

“That was very unusual,” Cathedral head coach Tommy Smith said. “We were biting our nails, trying to count kids as they came up the hill. We were thinking we had it because we were looking hard at Columbia.”

Cathedral’s Jalen McCoy finished second overall in the race, while Austin Gibson was 10th. Preston diamond finished 15th, Cade Miller came in at 19 and Nicholas Waycaster crossed the finish line at 21.

Like the Green Wave, the Saints had two top 10 finishes with Hayes Daly taking sixth and Sam Mosby taking seventh in the race. The boys finished second to Columbus Christian Academy.

“I’m real proud,” Trinity cross country coach Lena McKnight said. “I was hoping for state in men, and everybody I thought we had to beat, we did. It was Columbus Christian Academy’s first year to have a cross country team, and they showed up. I’m disappointed we had a team I wasn’t prepared for, but I’m not disappointed in my team’s performance whatsoever.”

As for the girls, Cathedral finished third, while Trinity finished fifth.

Caroline Kaiser finished 10th for the Green Wave, while Caroline Heatherly finished 25th for Trinity.

Adams County Christian School did not have results for boys or girls.
