DELHI, La. — Delta Charter School was so close to pulling off a huge upset of Delhi High School in LHSAA District 2-1A action Friday night. The Storm rallied all the way back from a 14-point halftime deficit to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Then Delhi showed why it has a winning football tradition as the Bears scored two touchdowns in a span of 11 seconds with less than two minutes remaining as they rallied for a 32-24 win to stay in the hunt for the district title.

“I was extremely proud of ourselves. We just ran out of gas,” Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said. “We simply had nothing left (late in the game).”

Delhi (6-3, 4-2) led Delta Charter 20-6 at halftime, but the Bears were unable to put the game away in the third quarter and that allowed the Storm to get back in the game. Led by Trey Poole and Jalen Williams, the Storm scored 18 straight points over the course of the third and fourth quarters to grab a 24-20 lead.

Poole had a rushing touchdown and completed nine of 24 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Williams finished with 64 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries to go with a receiving touchdown.

But the Bears took the lead at 26-24 with 1:26 left and added another touchdown at the 1:15 mark to put the game away.

“They made a big play. Their quarterback made a big throw of 40 yards for a touchdown. It was a good ball game all the way around,” Hoffpauir said. “But there’s nothing good about losing.”

Delta Charter (2-7, 1-5) finishes its season on the road Friday when the Storm travels to Bastrop, La. to take on winless Beekman Charter.
