Some people — and their actions — just make us smile.

At a time when the community needs help from every citizen, it’s still refreshingly surprising to see someone step up.

But Saturday, it won’t be just one somebody doing something positive for his or her community. It may be at least 70 folks.

Three area groups have joined forces to organize a workday at Duncan Park.

City leaders and employees recognized that something needed to be done to cleanup and spruce up the public park.

But area Master Gardeners — one of our favorite groups of local do-gooders — and the Cathedral High School football team — also a bright spot for our community — stepped up.

Joined by city workers the crowd plans to arrive at the park at 8:30 a.m. and work until 11 a.m.

The thought of 70 busy bees filling our city park to make it better is exciting, but the long-term effects of such community involvement are crucial to community wellness.

Residents who work for their community will take pride in it. Those who take pride in their community will care for it.

Then, the bug catches on.

Few people argue that Natchez needs to quickly begin moving in an all new, positive direction, in light of recent census numbers and tight city and county budgets.

But three groups have decided to start now, not later.
