CANTON — The (4-6) Trinity Saints enter the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools playoffs as underdogs, but the Saints aren’t paying any attention to that.

“Whether we’re 4-6 or 9-3, everybody is 0-0 right now,” Trinity head coach Zach Rogel said. “We get a chance to upset a top dog right off the bat.”

The No. 14 Trinity Saints will play No. 3 (7-3) Canton Academy on the road tonight, and after facing one power running team after the next, the Saints get to face a team that runs a spread offense.

“I like it,” Rogel said. “We have athletes, and they have athletes. The only thing is we haven’t seen a spread offense like that in a while, but we’ve prepared better this week than any other week this season.”

Gerrod Anderson leads the Panthers offensively with 1,241 passing yards, 1,172 rushing yards and 34 total touchdowns this season.

“He’s a stud,” Rogel said. “They’re athletic across the board, and they have a pretty scrappy line to go with it. They have good depth. There’s a reason they’re ranked No. 3.”

Despite having a losing record, the Saints have outscored opponents 443 to 349 this season, scoring 44.3 points per game this season, according to Max Preps. The Saints will look to match scores with a Canton team that has proven capable of scoring points, eclipsing the 40-point mark in six games this season.

“They’re playing some good ball, and we’re excited about playing them,” Rogel said. “The players aren’t ready for basketball season yet and neither am I.”
