LORMAN — Alcorn State University head football Melvin Spears continues to round out his coaching staff, naming New Orleans native and former Grambling State University star Bruce Eugene as his quarterbacks coach.

Eugene, a 2005 graduate of Grambling, played for newly named Grambling coach Doug Williams, and got tutelage from Spears, who was the quarterbacks coach at the time.

Eugene became one of the top players in Division 1-AA college football, breaking Grambling and SWAC records in the process. He was a three-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award.

He completed his college career with 13,530 passing yards, 140 passing touchdowns, four SWAC championships, SWAC offensive player of the year and championship player of the game, Bayou Classic MVP and the coveted Doug Williams Award.

Eugene began his coaching career under Spears as a quarterback coach for Grambling. Later, he was signed by the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and continued to play for the Canadian Football League, NFL European League and the Arena Football League.

Eugene has been coaching in New York City’s PSAL Varsity Football as a quarterback coach, offensive coordinator at Brooklyn Tech High School, Erasmus Hall High and co-head coach at Franklin K. Lane High.

Eugene has been living in Brooklyn, N.Y., most recently.
