CENTREVILLE — Silliman Institute senior quarterback Zach Kelly accounted for five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing, and the Wildcats’ defense held Centreville Academy to just 80 yards of total offense in a 41-0 drubbing of the Tigers Friday night to win the MAIS District 5-AAA championship.
It was indeed a rough senior night for Centreville.
The Tigers managed just five first downs and turned the ball over four times.
At 5-5 overall and a 2-2 district mark, the chances of being one of the top 16 teams to make the playoffs in Class AAA may be pretty slim.
Kelly completed eight of 11 passes for 148 yards with touchdown passes of 13 and 15 yards to Will Douglas, 48 yards to Devin Gros, and 18 yards to Tyler Leblanc. Kelly also scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter.
It was all Silliman (8-1, 4-0) from the start. The Wildcats scored 13 points in the first quarter and put up another 14 points in the second quarter to take a 27-0 halftime lead.
And their stout defense made sure there would be no comeback attempt by the Tigers. They kept going after quarterback Britt Netterville and made him uncomfortable in the backfield.
He completed just four of 26 passes for 16 yards and was intercepted twice.
The Wildcats ran the ball at will on Centreville’s defense and tallied 248 yards on the ground and 396 yards of total offense with 15 first downs.
Netterville was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 35 yards on seven carries. Tyler Caston had 32 yards on nine carries.
Silliman scored seven points each in the third and fourth quarters to put the game completely away.
