LIBERTY — Trinity Episcopal’s home opener against Amite School Center ended up being a road game because the baseball field at the former Huntington School in Ferriday was unplayable after Thursday night’s rain.

But that didn’t seem to bother the Saints at all as they rolled to a 13-0 win over the Rebels behind a seven-run outburst in the top of the third inning and home runs from Scott Turner, Sky Logan and Trevor Faust.

Daniel Dunaway pitched two shutout innings to pick up the win as Trinity’s pitching only gave up a single to Amite School Center in the five-inning contest which was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Faust and Turner each hit a two-run home run and Logan added a solo shot as the Saints racked up 15 hits. Jake Winston went 3-for-4 with a double while Logan also had a double to go 2-for-4.

Kent King went 2-for-3 with a triple and Dunaway helped his cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Trinity Episcopal (1-0) will play its home opener next Wednesday against Silliman Institute with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m. All of the Saints’ home games this season will be played at Huntington’s baseball field.

Parklane 8, Centreville 2

CENTREVILLE — If Centreville Academy is to be considered a top contender for the MAIS Class AA state title, than Parklane Academy could very well be among the Class AAA state title contenders in 2011.

After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Parklane pitcher Nathan Taylor settled down — much to Centreville’s chagrin — as he didn’t allow a single run in the final six innings as the Pioneers rallied to defeat the Tigers Friday night.

Parklane scored two runs in the top of the second inning to make it a tie ball game. The Pioneers than took the lead for good with one run in the top of the fourth. That was all the help Taylor would need, but he got plenty more. Parklane opened up the game by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-2 lead.

Hunter Authement led Parklane with three hits and Brandon Austin had two hits. Hunter Travis had the only extra-base hit for Centreville in the game with a double. The Tigers were held to just four hits.

Centreville (1-1) will look to avenge this loss when it plays at Parklane next Monday with the JV game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Jena 10, Block 8

JONESVILLE — After a season-opening loss 20-3 loss to Buckeye in its own tournament which included eight errors, Block was looking not only to play better but also get its first win.

The Bears did play better defense and committed fewer errors, but that would still not be enough as the Jena Giants used a couple of big innings to hold off Block Friday night at the Block Tournament.

Block had nine hits to just six for Jena. And even though Block’s four errors were half as many as they had in the loss to Buckeye, the Giants took advantage of them as well as several walks.

Jena had a 4-1 lead after two innings of play, but Block responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score. The Bears led 7-6 at the end of the third inning thanks to yet another three-run rally. However, the Giants answered with a four-run rally in the top of the fifth inning for a 10-7 advantage.

Block’s last chance came up short in the bottom of the fifth as the Bears could only get one run in.

Winning pitcher Cole helped his cause by going 2-for-3 with a double. Despite being saddled with the loss, Dylan Mayo went 3-for-4 at the plate and Vashawn Davis went 2-for-3 with a home run.

Block (0-2) will try once again for its first win of the season when it takes on Monterey today at noon as play continues at the Block Tournament.
