NATCHEZ — Sidney Davis had to revert back to his high school playing days to pull off the game-winner against Coahoma Community College Oct. 10.
Luckily for the Southwest Mississippi Bear wide receiver, it was only a year ago the former Natchez High standout was leading the charge at quarterback.
With a tied game in overtime, at wide receiver, Davis received the handoff before pulling up and launching a 19-yard pass into the end zone for the touchdown and game-winner.
“I wasn’t thinking about it too much,” Davis said. “The play had been working well in practice, so I knew we could pull it off.”
The Bears are 3-5 this season, and Davis is second on the team with 181 receiving yards. Former Adams County Christian School standout Trey Fleming has five catches for 35 yards, while former Centreville Academy quarterback Casey Haygood has completed 51 percent of his passes for 823 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions.
In other words, the Miss-Lou is well represented at Southwest.
“Me and Trey have been playing with each other since we were little,” Davis said. “Casey just adds another boost to the team.”
Southwest plays its final game of the season Thursday against Hinds Community College, and Davis plans on making the most of the last game of the year, especially now that he’s grown accustomed to the speed of the game.
“It’s been kind of a long year, but it’s been good,” Davis said. “The speed of the game took a little time adjusting to, but coming from playing 5A and 6A ball, it’s all about the same thing.”
