BUCKEYE — The (2-5) Vidalia Vikings fell to the (2-5) Buckeye Panthers 16-14 Friday night, falling to 1-3 in district.
The Vikings jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but struggled to maintain any offensive flow throughout the game.
Two Buckeye punts that went less than five yards gave the Vikings great field position in the first quarter, and Vidalia took advantage.
Jordan Mays scored first for the Vikings on a quarterback draw to give Vidalia a 7-0 lead. After another bad punt, the Vikings cashed in again with Julian Wilson running in from 19 yards out to take a 14-0 advantage.
Buckeye got on the board in the second quarter after Vidalia quarterback Tristan Weatherly was sacked in the end zone for a safety.
After failing to score on its first four possessions, Buckeye adjusted and started running trap plays, which opened the door for offensive success.
Buckeye scored on a run and converted the two-point conversion with two minutes to go in the second quarter to trim Vidalia’s lead to 14-10.
Buckeye took the lead in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard run, and the Vikings offense stagnated for the remainder of the game.
Wilson was limited to 25 rushing yards, while Weatherly threw for only 39 yards in the loss.
