NATCHEZ — The second game of a home-and-home series between Cathedral and Adams County scheduled for 7 Friday night was postponed.

Cathedral baseball coach Craig Beesley made the call at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday after looking at the playing conditions of Chester-Willis Field, where the Green Wave play their home games.

“When I went out there at 2:30, it was raining pretty hard,” Beesley said. “The mound and home plate were wet, and I added dirt to both spots last night.

“The infield was probably in playable condition if we had done some work, but the new dirt that was added to the mound and home plate is what had me worried.”

ACCS won its home game of the series 14-4 Tuesday. Beesley said the schools are going to try and reschedule Cathedral’s home game for sometime in April.

“When I looked at the forecast at 3 (p.m. Friday), the rain was supposed to come back later in the evening. It doesn’t look like it will now,” Beesley said late Friday afternoon.

“Sometimes you make the best decision at the time and later regret it.”

And Beesley said his players definitely wanted another shot at ACCS after the loss Tuesday.

“I wanted to see if the kids could bounce back, and they were wanting to play today so they could try to redeem themselves. It just didn’t work out for us,” he said.

Trinity Episcopal’s game at Silliman schedule for Friday evening was also canceled. Since Silliman is not a district opponent for the Saints, it is uncertain if the game will be rescheduled.

Centreville Academy’s junior varsity and varsity games at Copiah Academy in Gallman were also canceled. Centreville head coach Jason Horne said the games will not be rescheduled because the Tigers and the Colonels will play each other later in the season.

With the threat of heavy rain today, Franklin County’s softball tournament, which is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., is in limbo. If it is rained out, it will be rescheduled for Saturday, April 2.
