BASTROP, La. — For the second straight year, the Adams County Christian School Rebels had to go on the road to take on the Prairie View Academy Spartans, but this year they packed confidence.

With the Rebels off to a 3-1 start to the 2009 season, they were looking to extend their winning streak to three games.

And thanks to a complete team effort on both sides of the ball, and zero turnovers, ACCS rolled to a 28-6 win over Prairie View Friday night.

“That’s something we’ve worked on all week,” ACCS head coach Paul Hayles said. “Tonight we were fortunate to hold on to the ball and get some really good results.”

Rebels junior quarterback Kent Yates accounted for their first two touchdowns — both in the second quarter.

Yates threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Lee Swinney and scored on a 1-yard run. Yates also threw to Dillon Johnson for a two-point conversion after his touchdown run. That gave ACCS (4-1) a 14-0 halftime lead.

“I was pleased with the way the offense shifted gears and ran the two-minute offense,” Hayles said.

Bryce Murray scored on a 12-yard run and Johnny Smith added the extra point and the Rebels had a 21-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Christopher Perry scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter for a 28-0 lead.

However, Prairie View (0-4) made sure it would not be shut out. Gabe White scored on a 4-yard run with about 5:30 to go in the game for the Spartans’ only points of the game.

“Defense was lights out for three and a half quarters,” Hayles said. “Prairie View earned the touchdown they got. They moved the ball down the field.”

Yates completed 7 of 12 passes for 86 yards while Brandon Sanders had 16 carries for 73 yards to lead the Rebels’ ground game. Perry was the team’s leading tackler with seven solo tackles and one assist.

ACCS will have a much tougher opponent next Friday night when the Rebels travel to McComb to take on Class AAA Parklane at 7 p.m.
