NATCHEZ — Next week, more than 400 educators will be stepping out of the classroom into the Natchez Convention Center for the annual Mississippi Early Childhood Conference.

From Tuesday to Friday, the conference will be celebrating its 62nd year and its first time in Natchez.

“Anybody that has anything to do with early childhood will be here in Natchez next week,” Conference Chair Melissa Tenhet said.

Approximately 400 to 500 people are expected to show up for the conference, including directors, administrators, childhood professionals and students, Tenhet said.

No matter their profession, Tenhet said all attendees have the same end in mind.

“We’re all working toward the same goal and that is better programs for early childhood children,” Tenhet said.

The conference’s theme is “Imagine,” and Tenhet said the conference would celebrate fun, family and friends. Organizations such as the Mississippi departments of education, transportation and health will be represented, in addition to many colleges and non-commercial exhibitors.

“We’ve got fun presenters, activities and vendors who will be there throughout the three days,” Tenhet said.

Tenhet said she first visited Natchez while doing work for the Early Years Network.

“It’s just a lovely place because everybody’s so kind and welcoming, and it seemed like a good place to be for what we were talking about,” Tenhet said.

Natchez also offered more than just a convention center.

“We want them to have a great place to visit,” Tenhet said, referring to the conference attendees.

The Natchez Convention and Visitors Bureau Director of Sales Lynsey Smith, said the convention center’s downtown location is a big selling point, putting visitors in walking distance of numerous downtown venues.

The conference is free for students, although they must present their ID at registration. Registration fees for the conference differ depending on the amount of days and membership status.

Prices can be found on the Early Childhood Association’s website, msearlychildhood.org/training.

Tenhet said some vendor space is still available and items do not have to be educational. Anyone who is interested in being a vendor can contact her at 662-617-4377 or Smith at the Natchez CVB.
