NATCHEZ — A water line burst at Magnolia Bluffs Casino during a Natchez Fire Department training exercise Tuesday afternoon.

NFD training officer Luis Videgaray said the department was conducting training using the casino’s parking garage standpipe system for the first time.

When firefighters turned a hydrant on at approximately 3:30 p.m., the main water line to the casino ruptured. The standpipe did not rupture, Videgaray said.

Magnolia Bluffs Casino President Kevin Preston said the casino was without water while Natchez Water Works repaired the line, The casino was not damaged and did not close, Preston said.

NFD Chief Aaron Wesley said the pressure caused from the water flowing down Roth Hill Road might have precipitated the line rupture. A water line regulator may be needed, Wesley said, to prevent future breaks in the line.

Videgaray said the department was conducting training at the casino because the parking garage provides a unique training opportunity for firefighters.

“It has an open stairwell and a standpipe system, which is on buildings that are higher than one floor, and we don’t have another place like that in Natchez that we can train, so the casino was nice enough to let us do some training there,” he said.
