Defense reigns for Saints

VICKSBURG — For the second straight game, Trinity Episcopal’s defense threw a shutout as the Saints defeated the Porter’s Chapel Eagles 30-0 Friday night to remain undefeated.

Trinity Episcopal’s ground game and run defense were the key factors in the game. Led by R.J. Fleming, who had 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just nine carries, the Saints had 237 total rushing yards on 28 carries.

Porter’s Chapel was held in check by the Saints’ defense. The Eagles had a grand total of eight yards on the ground on 28 carries. They had just four first downs, 52 yards of total offense and were intercepted twice.

Trinity Episcopal (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the latest Clarion-Ledger Class A poll, scored its first touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 96-yard run by Fleming. Chas Moroney’s extra point gave the Saints a 7-0 lead at the 6:01 mark. They made it a 14-0 lead on Kent King’s 9-yard touchdown run and Moroney’s extra point with 1:20 to go in the opening quarter.

There wasn’t much scoring in the second quarter. In fact, Trinity was credited with a safety and two points after a bad snap on an attempted punt by Porter’s Chapel (1-4) with 1:17 left until halftime for a 16-0 lead.

Fleming gave the Saints a 23-0 lead with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter on a 3-yard run and they finished off the Eagles with 11:49 left in the ball game on King’s 39-yard touchdown run.

King had five carries for 36 yards and two touchdowns and he was the Saints’ leading receiver with two catches for 16 yards. Givonni Dent was 3-of-4 passing for 10 yards with no interceptions.
