NATCHEZ — An 18-year-old will serve 10 years in prison for manslaughter he was convicted of committing when he was age 16.
Jamon Vantre Williams, 204 Dumas Drive, was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison with 10 years of the sentence to be served on post-release supervision.
Williams allegedly delivered a fatal strike to 62-year-old John E. “Body Man” Henderson in September 2009.
Henderson was found dead with blunt force trauma to the back of his head after Williams punched him in the face, causing him to fall on a curb.
Williams’ attorney Tim Cotton said the situation of the case is a tragedy for all involved.
“It’s a tough case,” Cotton said.
Although Williams was 16 years old at the time of the crime, he faced the grand jury as an adult because children older than 13 can be charged as an adult for capital offenses, such as murder.
Adams County Youth Court Judge John Hudson ordered the transfer of Williams to circuit court for manslaughter in August to be tried as an adult after a transfer hearing took place.
Williams was also ordered to pay $200 in prosecution fees and court costs. The sentence included that a GED class be ordered for Williams through MDOC.
