TERRY — The last time Natchez High played a baseball game was over a week and a half ago. That was when the Bulldogs played host to the Natchez High Classic.

Since then, a pair of scheduled games at the Hattiesburg Tournament on March 5 were rained out and what was scheduled to have been the Bulldogs’ Division 6-6A opener at home against Jim Hill was postponed due to nine-weeks tests.

Finally, the Natchez High Bulldogs were back on the diamond Friday night and playing their division opener. However, it was on the road against the Terry Bulldogs. And it took one inning for both teams’ fortunes to change as Terry rallied from a 6-2 deficit midway through the ball game to defeat Natchez High 13-6.

“I hate losing the game because the boys played real hard. I’m proud of how they handled the adversity. I hope we learn from this game,” Natchez High head coach Charlie Williams said. “We’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game every game.”

Natchez High led 1-0 at the end of the first inning before tacking on three more runs in the top of the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Terry cut the lead in half by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third, but the visiting Bulldogs got those runs back in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

It still looked like either team’s game to win after the host Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-4 game. That was until Terry exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth and just like that the home team was ahead 12-6.

“We got off to a good start. We played good ball until the inning we gave up good ball until the inning we gave up eight runs,” Williams said. “We had two crucial errors and a couple of bad calls. We should’ve got out of the (bottom of the fifth) inning with no more than one or two runs.”

Terry won the game despite not having a single extra-base hit and not one multiple hitter. Davion Ward and Kedrick Smith each had a double for Natchez High.

Natchez High (2-1, 0-1) plays at Provine today with the junior varsity game at 1 p.m. and the varsity game at 3 p.m.

Caldwell Parish 10, Block 9

WINNSBORO, La. — The Block Bears were just three outs away from defeating Caldwell Parish Friday afternoon at the Franklin Parish Tournament until the unthinkable happened.

Block entered the bottom of the seventh inning with what looked like a seeming insurmountable 9-1 lead. That was until Caldwell Parish’s bats woke up and the Bears’ defense helped out with a pair of costly errors as the Spartans scored nine runs to rally for an unlikely victory.

The Bears scored three runs apiece in the top of the first, third and fourth innings while Chase Duncan held the Spartans to just one run, and that wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth. And for six innings, Caldwell Parish appeared ready to get this game over with.

“Chase Duncan pitched the first four innings and shut them down. My pitching after that went downhill,” Bears head coach Stevie McCarthy said.

Actually, it went downhill in the bottom of the seventh. The big hit during the Spartans’ incredible rally was a three-run home run by Carmon May. The rest of their hits in their final frame were singles.

“They started hitting the ball in the gaps and they had a three-run home run. Two of the (three) errors we committed were in that inning,” McCarthy said. “Two little pop-up flies. They were just line-driving it right over the infield. It’s like I tell them, ‘You’ve got to play until the game is over — seven innings.’”

Caldwell Parish won the game despite being out-hit 12 to eight. Vashawn Davis and Cody Harrington each went 3-for-4 with a triple and Preston Bowman was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Block (4-4) plays two games today at the Franklin Parish Tournament. The Bears take on Rayville at noon and Delhi Charter at 2 p.m.

Central Private upsets Centreville in district doubleheader

BAKER, La. — Just 24 hours after being shut out by Centreville Academy, the Central Private School Rebels were looking to avenge that loss as they hosted the Tigers Friday in an MAIS District 5-AA varsity doubleheader.

Central Private did just that. But no one in their right minds expected the Rebels to win both games. Guess what? They did. And they rallied late in both games to do so.

In the first game, Centreville took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh before Central Private scored two runs to take a dramatic 5-4 win. The Rebels had nine hits in the game while winning pitcher Brennan Fucich held the Tigers to just four hits.

What kept Centreville in this game after facing a 3-0 deficit after one inning of play was pitching and defense. The Rebels were blanked for the next five innings while the Tigers tied the game in the top of the third and went ahead 4-3 in the top of the sixth before the Rebels rallied in their last at-bat.

The second game saw Centerville take an early 2-0 lead until Central Private score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead and that would end up being the final score.

Central Private won the game despite giving up seven hits, including three doubles — two of them by Gage Chandler. Tyler Towles had the Tigers’ other double.

Centreville (6-4, 1-2) hosts Trinity Episcopal next Monday for a varsity doubleheader with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m.
