FERRIDAY — After securing a win in their varsity debut, Delta Charter suffered their first loss last week to Cedar Creek.
However, Storm head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said he and his team are taking the 42-8 loss as a learning experience.
“I think we still have a lot to learn,” Hoffpauir said. “We played a disciplined football team that didn’t make many mistakes, and I hope our guys learned that is where we are trying to get.”
This week, the Storm face their first road test of the year in Grant, a 4A school coming off a big 44-12 win against Beekman.
“They are athletic,” Hoffpauir said. “They are a big school with some athletes. They are going to run the double wing and have some people going everywhere. We have to be disciplined on defense. Everybody has to do their job, instead of worrying about other people.”
Executing one’s job is also what Hoffpauir stressed to the Storm on the offensive side of the ball.
“(Grant) runs a three front with four linebackers, so we’ll continue to do what we’ve always done,” Hoffpauir said. “We’ll make a few adjustments and get some guys to really understand what we are trying to do. We just have to know our responsibilities.”
Hoffpauir said another thing his team learned last week is preparation is key, especially against solid football teams.
“Last week I think the guys were a little relaxed after the first win,” Hoffpauir said. “We didn’t understand what was coming at us with Cedar Creek. We made a bunch of mistakes that just snowballed. Everyone agreed we weren’t prepared. We want them to understand what we are teaching them, we are doing for a reason.”
Although the Storm are always shooting for a win, Hoffpauir said he wants his team to turn in four solid quarters of play.
“If we play four quarters, we will have success,” he said. “We have to limit mistakes and control what we can control. Wins are always great, but right now we are trying to play the game the right way.”
The Storm and Cougars are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
