NATCHEZ — The Natchez man accused of running down four law enforcement officers with his vehicle last week was released Monday on a $40,000 bond.

Contrell Demond Shelly, 27, 205 E. Franklin St., appeared before Justice Court Judge Patricia Dunmore Monday for arraignment.

Shelly had been held without bond in the Adams County Jail since Thursday night after being charged with four counts aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

An Adams County sheriff’s deputy responded to a call of shots fired on Minor Street Thursday shortly before the incident, finding three Natchez Police officers interviewing people in a vehicle at the scene, sheriff’s reports indicate.While the interview was ongoing, the officers heard another vehicle rev its engine, and the vehicle sped toward the officers. The officers were able to avoid being struck, but the deputy had to jump on top of his vehicle.

The deputy, whose vehicle was facing the same direction as the fleeing vehicle, followed the vehicle that allegedly attacked the officers and eventually pulled the vehicle over, arresting Shelly.

At the arraignment, Dunmore asked a series of questions to Shelly and Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies prior to setting the bond, including whether Shelly had a criminal record and if anyone was injured in the alleged assault.

Shelly said he did not have a criminal record, and ACSO Investigator Stanley Searcy said no one was injured in the incident.

Dunmore set a $10,000 bond for each of the counts, and Shelly bonded out at 4:15 p.m.
