DELHI — Despite another big performance from running back Julian Wilson, the Vidalia Vikings fell short against Delhi 32-31 on the road.
The Vikings fell behind early in the contest, as Delhi intercepted a Tristan Weatherly pass and returned it for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.
The Vikings would answer on a 14-yard Weatherly touchdown pass to Jordan Mays, but Delhi scored on a 20-yard run and a 21-yard pass to push the lead to 20-6 after the first quarter.
Wilson rumbled in from two yards out for the only score of the second quarter, pulling Vidalia within seven at halftime.
The lone score of the third quarter went Delhi’s way on a 31-yard pass.
Wilson found the end zone for the second time early in the fourth on a four-yard run to cut the lead to 26-19.
Then, after driving all the way to the Delhi 15-yard line, Vidalia fumbled, Delhi recovered, and scampered 85-yards the other way for a touchdown to increase their lead to 32-19.
But the Vikings didn’t hang their heads. Three plays later, Wilson took off for a 50-yard touchdown, his third of the night, to put Vidalia within seven at 32-25. Wilson finished the game with 160 yards rushing.
With 1:57 left to play, Vidalia’s Antione Taylor rumbled into the end zone from four yards out to cut the lead to 32-31, and after a facemask penalty moved the ball half the distance to the goal line for the extra point try, Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock elected to go for two.
Wilson took a handoff right up the middle, but was stuffed by the Delhi line.
After electing to kick the ball deep, the Viking defense was able to hold Delhi, but the Bears were able to run out the clock without having to punt.
With the loss, Vidalia falls to 1-1 on the year and will face Ferriday next week.
