ALEXANDRIA, La. — For the second straight day, the Cathedral Lady Green Wave went 1-1 at the 2011 Grace Christian Softball Tournament.

Things were more difficult for the Lady Green Wave Saturday, as their opponents, Holden and Oak Hill, are the top two ranked teams in the current LHSAA Class B power rankings.

In Game 1, Ginny Daggett hit a solo home run off Holden pitcher Grantham in the bottom of the first inning, but it was not enough as the Lady Rockets, the No. 1 team in Class B, held on for a 2-1 win over the Lady Green Wave.

Oddly enough, Holden scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning. After that, it was a pitching duel between Grantham and Cathedral’s Mollie Devening.

“Neither team could get rolling. It’s just one of those games where we couldn’t get the bats going,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said.

The Lady Rockets finished with four hits in the game while Cathedral managed just three hits. Grantham helped her cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate and Ray added a triple. Peyton Monticello had a double for the Lady Green Wave.

Cathedral had to battle back from an early 5-0 deficit to get a 7-6 victory over the Oak Hill Lady Rams, ranked No. 2 in Class B.

Oak Hill scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and it looked like the rout was on. But Cathedral answered with five runs of its own in the top of the second inning and tacked on two more runs in the top of the third.

“They just came out hitting the ball in the first inning. We had both of our errors in that inning. We could’ve laid down, but these girls fought back,” Blackwell said. “We came back in the second inning. We had to play some small ball. That cranked us up and got us going.”

Oak Hill had one last chance to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Mollie Devening allowed just one run to come in.

Daggett had a double for Cathedral. Amber Jarrell homered and Courtney Ivey had a double for Oak Hill.

Cathedral (7-4) plays at Vicksburg Thursday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.

Franklin County wins a pair at Grace Christian Tournament

ALEXANDRIA, La. — After picking their first win of the season and then their second tie on Friday, the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs swept both of their games Saturday at the 2011 Grace Christian Softball Tournament.

In the first game, Franklin County jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first inning en route to an 18-8 win over the Northwood Lady Gators from Lena, La.

The Lady Bulldogs led 10-1 after two innings of play, but Northwood-Lena kept the game going with a pair of good innings itself. However, Franklin County finally put the game away by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and Northwood had had enough.

KeKe Collins belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning while Allison Hauer had a big game at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a triple and two doubles. Lay Lay Griffin went 2-for-4 with a triple of her own.

The second game saw Franklin County once again get out to an early lead as the Lady Bulldogs took care of the Montgomery Lady Tigers 7-2. That game was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., but the game started an hour and a half late.

Collins didn’t mind the later-than-expected start as she hit a two-run shot out of the park in the bottom of the first inning. Franklin County added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 4-0.

Montgomery scored one run in the top of the third inning, but the Lady Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Lady Tigers scored their last run of the game in the top of the fifth.

Rachel Dier was the winning pitcher for Franklin County in both games.

Collins went 2-for-2 and Mildred Starks, who went 2-for-2 with a double in the win over Northwood-Lena, was 2-for-3 with a double in the second game.

Franklin County (3-3-2) begins Region 7-3A play Tuesday at West Marion. The JV game begins at 5 p.m. and the varsity game follows at 6 p.m.
