ferriday — The varsity debut for Delta Charter School nearly went off without a hitch.

The Storm rolled to a 30-6 victory against Lake Charles College Prep, but Delta Charter found themselves facing adversity early.

“We got the ball to open the game, and on the first play, they punched us in the mouth and we fumbled,” Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said. “The next play they threw a touchdown and all of a sudden we were down.”

That didn’t silence the Storm, though.

“Our guys didn’t back down,” Hoffpauir said. “They stepped up and scored 30 unanswered points, and I’m proud of them for that. They stepped up.”

Hoffpauir said freshman quarterback Trey Poole did a good job of leading Delta Charter on offense.

“He’s going to be a good one,” he said. “He’s a ninth grader, but he’s got the mental view of a junior or senior. He knows the game and controls the game.”

Along with a solid offensive outing, Hoffpauir said the Storm dominated defensively as well.

“The defense played great,” he said. “After giving up that first score, they played shut down football. We had three or four interceptions and got pressure on the quarterback all night.”

Hoffpauir said the monumental win is big, but is one the Storm will have to soon move on from.

“I just told them to enjoy it this weekend, obviously it is a spectacular win, but Monday they need to be ready to work,” Hoffpauir said. “We’ve got to move forward and get ready for another battle next week.”
