Adams’ five touchdowns leads to Franklin Co. loss

SUMMIT — The one player Franklin County High School had to key on yet still could not contain for North Pike High School was senior quarterback Juwan Adams. And he made the Bulldogs pay.

Adams accounted for all five of North Pike’s touchdowns in regulation, three passing and two rushing, and racked up 381 yards of total offense as the Jaguars rallied to upset Franklin County 38-35 in double overtime.

Surprisingly, the overtime session was not settled by either Adams or Bulldogs’ quarterback Jacob McDaniel, who himself had a good game. Instead, it became a battle of the kickers – Franklin County’s Thomas Slagle and North Pike’s Trent Coleman.

Slagle missed a short field goal that would have won the game for the Bulldogs in the first overtime and had a field goal in the second overtime that may or may not have went directly over one of the goal posts ruled no good.

a 27-yard field goal to give North Pike a much-needed win, especially over a team that is ranked No. 5 in MHSAA Class 3A.

Honestly, this game probably should not have gone into overtime to begin with. North Pike had a vastly decided advantage in first downs, 24 to 13; rushing yards, 184 to 101; and passing yards, 283 to 116.

North Pike had an early 14-0 lead before Franklin County went on a tear between the end of the first quarter and the 4:20 mark of the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored the Jaguars 35-7 during that duration to give them a 35-21 advantage.

McDaniel had a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs and had a 51-yard touchdown pass to Tony Wells while De’Martre Collins had a one-yard touchdown run and an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.

But in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars turned to Adams and he delivered with a 5-yard touchdown run with 8:27 to go and an 11-yard TD pass to Jackson at the 6:45 mark. Their defense also stepped up, keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone the rest of the game.

Collins was held to just 34 yards on 18 carries while McDaniel was just 6-for-20 passing for 116 yards and one touchdown. Wells had four catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Franklin County (2-1) will be on the road again next Friday when it plays at Loyd Star with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
