ferriday — For the first time in school history, the Delta Charter Storm will take the field as a varsity football team and as a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
But the Storm won’t be alone Friday night, as their opponent, Lake Charles College Prep, will also be making their varsity debut.
“They are in the same boat we are,” Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said.
While little is known about Lake Charles College Prep, Hoffpauir said he was able to get some information from their head coach.
“He said they do a little bit of everything,” Hoffpauir said. “They can spread it out, but will also get in the eye. It looks like they are going to mix it up, but we are going to do what we do and take care of our side of the ball.”
As far as their side of the ball goes, Hoffpauir said he and the team are confident with where they stand.
“We’ve had a really good week of practice,” he said. “The coaches and I have talked and we are satisfied with what we’ve done so far. The kids are excited and we still have some football to learn, but we are moving in the right direction.”
Even though it will be players’ first taste of varsity action, Hoffpauir said he isn’t worried about them getting caught up in the moment.
“We’ve stressed to them about what to expect and things like that,” Hoffpauir said. “Luckily, the majority of the kids played football last year, so we do have some games under our belt. They are pretty level headed and know the game. We are just going to keep it simple and do what we know.”
Ultimately, though, the Storm are shooting for a win.
“That is our goal,” Hoffpauir said. “Our goal is to win every week. I think we are as prepared as we can be, and we’ll have a better idea Friday of how good we really are.”
Delta Charter and Lake Charles College Prep are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Ferriday.
