MENDENHALL — After getting swept in its three games at last Saturday’s Parklane Academy Tournament, the Cathedral Lady Green Wave needed a win to get some momentum back.

May people would not expect to happen on the road against a good Simpson Academy team that went into the game with a 13-5 overall record and a No. 4 ranking in all of MAIS Class AAA.

However, Cathedral did the impossible as Elizabeth Smith pitched a complete-game three-hitter to go with eight strikeouts as the Lady Green Wave upset the Lady Cougars 4-2 Monday afternoon in their MAIS District 4-AAA opener.

“We played a heck of a game. Elizabeth pitched a great game. The defense played better than it has in a long time,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said.

Cathedral led Simpson Academy 1-0 after one inning of play and added another run in the top of the third inning to go ahead 2-0. The Lady Cougars plated two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game before the Lady Green Wave retook the lead with one run in the top of the fourth and scored the game’s final run in the top of the fifth.

Smith struck out eight batters and walked only two batters in picking up the win on the mound. Both of her runs allowed were unearned.

“She was just on tonight. She threw a really good game tonight,” Blackwell said.

Cathedral had nine hits in the game and was led by Abby Brown, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, and Caroline Kaiser, who was 2-for-3 with one run batted in and scored one run. Baylee Graning was 2-for-4 and scored one run. However, Blackwell said he was not pleased about having 10 runners left on base.

Cathedral (4-6, 1-0) plays host to Adams County Christian School today at 6 p.m.

Columbia Academy 5, ACCS 4

COLUMBIA — Brianna Henson pitched seven and two-thirds solid innings and Ashleigh Williams had two extra-base hits for the ACCS Lady Rebels, but it was the Columbia Academy Lady Cougars that prevailed 5-4 in eight innings Monday afternoon in an MAIS District 4-AAA game.

Columbia Academy rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings and then won the game on a gapper in the bottom of the eighth off reliever and losing pitcher Ashleigh Williams

“I thought we battled hard, just came up on the short end of the stick,” ACCS head coach Rick Fife said. “We battled, but we felt like if we could have these outings on a nightly basis, we can be successful.”

Columbia Academy scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning off Henson to take the early lead. ACCS, however, would respond with one run in the top of the fourth inning and two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Rebels added to their lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Petty.

“They had 1-2-3 up the next inning. They had their top up the next inning, so I knew it would be tough,” Fife said.

The Lady Cougars scored on a single to make it a 4-3 game, but a defensive gem by Bailey Boyd which threw to second base for a force out at second base nearly stole the show. But the home team scored again on a single, this one to make it a 4-4 game.

Henson allowed six hits, struck out one and walked none in an outstanding performance on the mound. Williams went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Anna McDaniel and Mackenzie Landers each had a double.

But what hurt the Lady Rebels the most was a defense that committed four errors. Columbia Academy, however, did not commit a single error.

ACCS (9-11, 2-3) next plays at 6 p.m. today at Cathedral in a key district game for both teams.

“Big one tomorrow. Looking forward to it,” Fife said.

Centreville Academy 15,

Ben’s Ford 0

CENTREVILLE — On Senior Night, Centreville Academy’s Makenzie Tarver pitched a shutout as the Lady Tigers routed the Ben’s Ford Christian School Lady Eagles 15-0 in three innings Monday afternoon in an MAIS District 5-AAA game.

Tarver was one of three seniors honored before the game along with Katelynn Bell and Marti Ann Longmire. Once the game started, there was no stopping the Lady Tigers.

Ali Carmichael put the finishing touches on the win when she singled in the winning run with two outs and a runner on third base in the bottom of the third inning. Macie Miley had a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
