NATCHEZ — After coming off a defensive showdown in Week 1 against Silliman, the Trinity Episcopal Day School Saints lit up the scoreboard Friday night in a 55-22 win against University Academy.

“We were just clicking early offensively,” Trinity head coach Zach Rogel said. “We were executing to near perfection. We had some big runs and catches and we are feeling really good about this win.”

Trinity, an MAIS AA school, once again played up in classification, University Academy is an MAIS AAAA school, but it didn’t hold the the Saints back.

Trinity was able to put up 26 first-quarter points and rack up another 22 points in the second to put the game out of reach early.

Kevontaye Caston started the scoring on a 50-yard touchdown run, with less than a minute off the clock in the first.

University answered with a 27-yard run from Corey Rosenthal, but Trinity responded with two touchdowns of their own, an 18-yard run from David Jackson and a 15-yard run from Jakarius Caston.

Rosenthal’s big night continued, though when he found the end zone from 49 yards out to bring University Academy back within striking distance, but the Saints took control.

Jackson broke a 73-yard touchdown run at the end of the quarter to spark the Saints moving forward.

In the second quarter, Kevontaye Caston’s arm came to life, as he tossed two touchdowns, a 32-yarder to Demond Fleming and a 45-yarder to Jakarius Caston. Kevontaye Caston even found the end zone on defense on a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“I thought he did very well,” Rogel said of Caston. “He orchestrated the offense. He had some long runs and broke a lot of tackles. He made plays with his feet and also had a bunch of good passes.”

Trinity capped their scoring in the third on another Caston connection, this time from 39 yards out.

Kevontaye Caston finished 6-of-13 for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Jakarius Caston was the leading receiver and Fleming added 58 receiving yards of his own.

The Saints were balanced offensively, though, with Jackson leading the way with 96 yards and Kevontaye Caston adding 60.

The Saints defense also came to play, holding University Academy to 256 yards, despite not having a leading tackler and defensive presence in Cade Wells available due to injury.

“Coach (Chris) Bunio did a great job for us and coached up Jacob Netterville,” Rogel said. “Netterville is a new addition to our team and he coached him up all week. He went in and I wouldn’t be surprised if he led us in tackles. He did an impressive job.”

Rogel said he hopes this is the momentum boost his team needs heading into another tough matchup in the third week of the season.

“I’m hoping we see that hard work really pays off and we continue to work harder,” Rogel said. “We are going to have to come back down to earth before we play Copiah. It is going to be a war.”
