NATCHEZ — With the unofficial votes counted Tuesday night, Willie B. Jones and Adam Kirk were celebrating victories in the district constable races.

Northern District Constable

Jones garnered 2,030 votes, or 51.56 percent of the vote, to Deselle Mody-Davis, who had 1,900, votes, or 48.26 percent, when the polls closed.

At the Holiday Inn Express on Canal Street, Jones’ supporters spilled out from the meeting room into the lobby, talking and eating.

“I feel good,” Jones said. “I really feel good about this win.”

Jones said he wanted to thank God, his supporters, friends and family.

“Without good friends and family, you can’t get anywhere,” Jones said.

Jones said he was also going to the courthouse today for the absentee ballot count. Absentee votes will be counted later this week.

Jones was also complimentary about the race.

“It was a clean race,” Jones said. “Nobody played dirty politics.”

Mody-Davis said he wanted to thank his family, friends and supporters too, as well as God for giving him the opportunity to be in the runoff.

“It was a close race and a hard-fought race,” Mody-Davis said.

Ultimately though, Mody-Davis said the voters decided who they thought should win.

“I just congratulate (Jones) on his victory,” Mody-Davis said.

Absentee votes will be counted later this week.

Southern District Constable

For the Southern District Constable race, Kirk had 2,202 votes, or 53.68 percent of the vote, to Matthew Freeman’s 1,894 votes, or 46.17 percent.

“I feel a little overwhelmed,” Kirk said. “I’m very honored so many people came out and supported me, and at the same time I’m very excited to get started working for Adams County as their next constable.”

Kirk was helping to set up his yard for a get-together with his friends, family and supporters when he heard the news.

“(The election results) started coming in before we could even set up,” Kirk said.

Kirk said he wanted to thank everyone for their support, as well as let them know one thing.

“I’m not going to let them down,” Kirk said.

And, with the election over, Kirk said he only had one thing left to do.

“I’m going to start cleaning up and picking up signs,” he said.

Kirk was also complimentary about his opponent.

“I think Matthew did a great job,” Kirk said.

For his part, Freeman congratulated his Kirk on his victory.

“I hope he does a good job and serves Adams County well,” Freeman said.

Freeman said he was grateful for everyone who had faith in him.

“I just want to thank everybody that came out and voted for me and everybody who supported me and everybody who had anything to do with it,” Freeman said.
