LOWER SUSSEX, Del. — The Southwest regional champion Vidalia Girls Little League All-Stars finally got their first win at the 2015 Senior League Softball World Series Tuesday afternoon as they held on for a 10-6 win over Asia-Pacific champion Guam.

Elizabeth Smith was strong through her first five innings as she held Guam to just two runs on four hits. Then Guam got to her to the tune of four runs on four hits after Vidalia appeared on its way to an easy win after grabbing at 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

“She did really well. She hit all of her spots. Guam chased a lot of pitches,” Vidalia head coach Wesley McCarver said. “The sixth inning, they started hitting us a little bit. Gave up a couple of walks. One of their girls had a triple to right center that rolled all the way to the fence.”

McCarver said that his team had played small ball against Guam and that Guam tried to do the same in the top of the sixth. He added that Guam hit a couple of line drives that Vidalia couldn’t handle. After allowing a lead-off base hit in the top of the seventh, Smith retired the side to put a halt to Guam’s attempted late rally.

Vidalia scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and six more in the bottom of the fourth off losing pitcher Myah Quenga, who was chased after three and one-third innings. She allowed 10 runs on nine hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts.

“Quenga was a lot slower than what we’re used to. It took a couple of innings to get used to her slow pitching,” McCarver said. “It was super hot today. I’m proud of them. We played good defense.”

Anna McDaniel went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in while Smith helped her own cause by going 2-for-4, Katlyn McCarver was 2-for-3, and Shelbie Vinet had a double. Laken Hood, Shauneisha Crumpton and Delicia Ceasor each had a single.

Vidalia will look to finish strong in Pool A when it takes on East regional champion Bristol Boro Little League out of Pennsylvania today at 2 p.m.
