Election update: Freeman, Patten in runoff for sheriff

NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield lost his bid for a third term in Tuesday’s election.
His two Democratic challengers, Randy Freeman and Travis Patten, are now headed to a run-off on Aug. 25.
In unofficial numbers with all precincts reporting, Mayfield received 24.9 percent of the vote, or 2,109 total votes.
Patten was the top vote getter, taking 3,463 ballots, or 40.8 percent of the total election. Freeman received Freeman 2,912 votes, or 34.3 percent.
The winner of the Democratic runoff will face independent Elvis Prater in the November general election.
