LAUREL — Adams County Christian School’s Kaci Guedon had never played goalie in a high school soccer game before Saturday afternoon.

Her first test was a Laurel Christian team that has racked up the majority of state championships the past 10 years.

Guedon saved 25 shots on target along with two penalty kicks, and for the first time in program history, ACCS defeated Laurel Christian, 1-0.

Guedon was tested early and often, and with both penalty attempts for Laurel Christian coming in the first half of the match, ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said he was surprised the Lady Rebels managed to keep the score level at 0-0.

“For us to come into halftime and it be 0-0 was big,” Allgood said.

With their defensive play as solid as ever, the Lady Rebels were able to strike in the 61st minute when Jordan Parker slid a shot into the left hand corner of the goal past the Laurel Christian keeper.

“There was nervousness, excitement and a belly full of knots after that,” Allgood said. “For the next six minutes, their girls’ intensity went up. And once again Kaci Guedon stepped up with four or five stops. She was my player of the day, and for her first high school match to get shot at that many times and make that many saves, it is better than the sword swolower at the fair.”

Allgood said the final blow of the whistle to end the match was music to his ears.

“When that whistle sounded it was a beautiful sound of history being made for the AC soccer program,” he said. “For our girls to hang on to a 1-0 victory, that is huge. It is just a major stepping stone towards this season.”

Allgood said it was such a huge moment, because not long ago, the Lady Rebels were struggling to even stay close with Laurel Christian.

“This is the same team that two years ago beat us 12-0,” Allgood said. “We’ve come a long way against one of the super powers of the game.”

With the win, ACCS improves to 1-0 on the season. But the road doesn’t get much easier as they travel to Hartfield Academy for their next match Saturday.

“In this conference there are no easy bumps,” Allgood said.
