VIDALIA — The Vidalia Little League All-Stars are one win away from what they set out to do this season — make the World Series.

With an 11-1 pounding of Jackson Parish Louisiana Monday night, Vidalia advanced to the championship game of the regional tournament, and awaits the winner of New Mexico against either Texas East or Texas West.

“This is going to be the biggest game of their softball career up to this point,” Vidalia head coach Wesley McCarver said of the championship game. “It is a great feeling.”

Despite the lopsided final score, the semifinal matchup with Jackson Parish wasn’t a walk in the park.

Vidalia fell behind in the third inning, when Kamryn Searcy knocked in a run on a single.

Vidalia quickly came back in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own on a Madison Johnston RBI single.

That opened the flood gates.

Vidalia added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 3-1, and then put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Marty Lewis got the scoring started in the fifth with an RBI double and Delicia Ceasar added a run on a wild pitch.

In the sixth Lexi Emmanuel knocked in a run on a single, Brianna Henson recorded an RBI single, Elizabeth Smith plated two runs on a single, Johnsonston recorded another RBI single and Katlyn McCarver added an RBI single. The game ended on a bases loaded walk to make the score 11-1.

“They persevered through a couple bad innings of hitting and just kept on battling,” McCarver said. “The pitching was a little slower than we are used to and the girls had to adjust to it. They were dropping their hands, and once we got that corrected, they started hitting a little bit.”

McCarver was quick to acknowledge everything started off with small ball, though.

“Once we started bunting, it got in their heads and we kept bringing people around to score runs,” he said. “It worked once, so why stop? The way we always coach is if it works, keep doing it until they stop us.”

Vidalia also benefitted from a strong outing on the mound from Lewis and solid defense behind her.

“She did a great job pitching tonight,” McCarver said. “She hit her spots very well. I’m always confident when she is on the mound.”

The championship game of the tournament is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.

“I think if we play ball like we did (Sunday) night and the like the last few innings of (Monday’s) game, we’ve got a really good chance to win,” McCarver said.
