NATCHEZ — Now that the city has finished its first round of street repairs, which included 18 streets, Public Works Supervisor Justin Dollar said he’s getting ready to pave more.
Before he can begin a second round of repairs though, the city must first approve an added $500,000 to the Natchez Public Works and Office of Engineering Services’ budget.
“I think the board will approve that,” Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said. “It’s been thoroughly discussed.”
Dollar said which streets would be paved in the second round — which would begin sometime in October — haven’t been determined yet.
However, Dollar said he expects the board to have a heavy sway in the matter.
Ward 1 Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis said should like the city to pave Commerce and Pearl streets.
“We need to get together and ride around so you can see my streets,” Arceneaux-Mathis said at the board’s last meeting. “I have some big problems.”
Ward 3 Alderwoman Sarah Carter Smith suggested making a list of the worst streets in the city, and determining which ones should be paved from that.
Once the board approves the added funds and a list of streets is determined, Dollar said the department would use $300,000 for microseal treatment and $200,000 for overlay.
Microseal is a less extensive treatment, while overlay is a complete re-paving of streets.
To date, the city has spent approximately $500,000 on street repair.
Funds for street repairs come from Magnolia Bluffs Casino lease payments to the city for use of its Roth Hill property.
The board of aldermen will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the city council chambers, 124 S. Pearl St.
