TUPELO — Baseball season didn’t end with just a Class 1A state championship for some Cathedral High School players.
For Andrew Beesley, Pate Shirley and Sam Parker an invitation to the Mississippi Elite Underclassmen Showcase extended their season a few weeks.
“It was good to see them be invited and to be able to come play,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “It was an invitation only showcase and all three represented Cathedral well.
Beesley said the selection process was strict, and that he was glad to see three of his players chosen.
“They select about 130 athletes and break them into teams,” Beesley said. “They have 60 seniors and they made up four teams, and the other 70 or so are 9th through 11th graders that made up teams.”
The showcase took place at Tupelo Christian High School, and Beesley said it was a good opportunity for his players to get a look from college and professional scouts.
“There were a lot of scouts,” Beesley said. “Some junior college, some 4-year schools and even some professionals. We made contact with them and it is good that they are now able to put a face with a name. It definitely gives our kids an advantage that these scouts know them now.”
Beesley said the presence of scouts only boosted the player’s performances.
“There are a lot of schools our kids would like to go to,” Beesley said. “They were able to see us in the state championship series, but to see them one on one only helps the kids.”
All three had a solid showing in a game Wednesday with Andrew Beesley going 2-for-3 with a double, Shirley going 0-1 with a walk and Parker pitched an inning, gave up one hit, struck out one and reached a velocity of 85 mph.
