BLACK HAWK, LA. — Chad Ray Smith, who was reported missing Thursday from his job at an oil rig in Black Hawk, La., was found sometime early this morning and is in OK condition.

Smith reportedly wandered from the oil rig, became disoriented, and then fell asleep some distance away from the rig, said Vernon Stevens, spokesperson for the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

When Smith woke up, Stevens said he “followed the sound of the rig” back to the site.

“It was well after dark when he wandered back,” Stevens said. “He (Smith) said he got overheated and went into the woods and got disoriented.”

Stevens said Smith is in “OK” condition, and doesn’t believe he received any medical help upon his return.

“The distance he went, and exactly why he went — these are things I don’t know,” Stevens said.

The Concordia Parish Fire Department, metro ambulance, CPSO officials and “several helicopters” responded to the scene Thursday, Stevens said.
