VIDALIA — With two runners on and one out in the fourth inning, Tate Walsworth sent a shot over the heads of Haughton outfielders, scoring both Concordia Parish runners and tying the game 3-3.

“I thought it was going to boost them over the hump and get us going,” Concordia Parish coach Rob Rushing said.

Unfortunately for the Concordia Parish machine pitch all-stars, the momentum wouldn’t last long, as Haughton scored seven runs on seven hits in the very next inning, aided by an error early in the inning. With an 11-3 lead and the hour-and-a-half time limit draining low, Concordia Parish’s time was running out.

“It’s tough,” Rushing said. “You always have a bad inning with this age group, and unfortunately it happened.”

Concordia Parish had a small two-out rally in them, however, as Walsworth reeled off his second double of the game, scoring two runners and bringing the team within five. The game ended on a strikeout on the very next at bat, though, giving Haughton an 11-6 victory.

Rushing said the mental mistakes in the field opened the door for defeat in the opening round of pool play in the 7-and-under tournament.

“Fielding errors, throwing errors and it kills the morality of the kids when that happens,” Rushing said. “It’s hard to get them to overcome that.”

In the loss, Concordia Parish made seven errors and generated eight hits. Walsworth led the team, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI.

Meanwhile, Haughton totaled 10 hits and six errors. Carter Shaw led Haughton with two triples.

Rushing said he hopes his team can learn from the loss, and use the experience moving forward, as Concordia Parish looks to draw a high seed for a double elimination tournament beginning this weekend.

“We have to get them to move on and not make the same mistakes next time,” Rushing said. “We need to stop the errors in the field and put the bat on the ball a little more.”
