NATCHEZ — This weekend, Natchez is celebrating with art and music.
The weekend’s weather forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with some clouds on Saturday. The highs will be in the low 90s, while the lows will be in the low 70s.
Second Saturday
With the month of July half over, it’s time for Natchez’s Second Saturday event in downtown Natchez.
Shops and galleries will extend their hours, allowing attendants to fully enjoy Natchez’s downtown area.
The event features local group “The Jazzers” on Main and Commerce streets from 6-8 p.m.
The Natchez Downtown Development Association hosts the event.
Natchez Art Association exhibit and painting class
This Saturday, the Natchez Art Association is throwing a free painting session.
“It’s actually an opportunity for the public to come in and create a painting of their choosing,” Carolyn Weir, NAA’s administrator, said.
The event lasts from 2-5 p.m. and is open to children and adults. Weir said the class is not a formal class headed by an instructor.
“This is just come in and enjoy the wonder of color,” Weir said.
All supplies will be provided.
The center is also hosting an exhibit of the members of the NAA. Members will display their newest works of art from noon-5 p.m.
Twelve members of the Association have submitted artwork, giving the center approximately 15-20 new pieces to show.
Weir said the pieces include painting and some mobile sculptures, and all work is for sale.
Both events are free to the public. Wine and snacks will be served at the exhibit.
Deborah McNeal and Kamaria Parker exhibit
This Saturday the ArtsNatchez gallery will be filled with the works of Deborah McNeal and Kamaria Parker.
McNeal is a folk artist who grew up in Natchez in her grandmother’s house on the Mississippi River.
Carolyn Weir, gallery coordinator for NatchezArts, said McNeal often works with acrylics.
Some of her paintings are on ironing boards in addition to traditional paintings on canvas and wood.
Parker is an art teacher at Natchez High. Parker also often works with acrylics.
The two artists are good friends and often exhibit together.
Together Weir said the two give “a sense of new and old Natchez.”
The free event lasts from 6-8 p.m. at 425 Main St., Natchez. Wine and refreshments will be served.
