NEW ORLEANS — The Natchez Democrat won 23 total awards Saturday at the Mississippi Press Association’s annual conference, including first place in general excellence and community service.
Publisher Kevin Cooper also won the J. Oliver Emmerich Award for Editorial Excellence for the 2014 editorial of the year in the state. The honor is the highest given for editorial writing in Mississippi, among all newspapers of all sizes.
Cooper’s winning editorial scolded state Sen. Melanie Sojourner for repeated absences during the Mississippi legislative session.
The newspaper’s first place award for community service recognized the regular Monday “You Asked; Please Fix” feature, which answers questions about the community submitted by readers and features photos of public properties that need to be fixed.
