vidalia — Concordia Bank was able to hold on to an early lead and fend off Computer Consultants in the closing game of the youth season in Vidalia Thursday, 13-7.
Computer Consultants appeared to be in control early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first behind an RBI-single from Mallory Hinson, but Concordia Bank stormed back in the bottom of the inning.
Concordia Bank lit up the scoreboard with 10 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-1 lead.
“We played a good game,” Concordia Bank head coach Kenny Spear said. “We started out strong and ended strong, but had a couple of weak innings in the middle.”
Those weak innings allowed Computer Consultants to claw back into the game.
They posted two runs in the second inning and four in the fourth inning, but were unable to dig out of the early deficit.
“We told them before the game they needed to come out with 110 percent and they didn’t in the first two innings,” Computer Consultants co-coach Jay Gamberi said. “They kind of came back in the last bit with that last ditch effort. I think we would’ve gotten on a role at that point, but we were too little, too late. When you start late, you pay the price for it.”
However, Gamberi said it was nice to see his team not give up after falling behind.
“It was very encouraging,” he said. “These kids love the game and they are going to go far in it. They have the heart for it, and I’m glad we had the opportunity to get them together in the summer and let them get in some extra practice.”
For Concordia Bank, Spear said this win capped a successful season for the team.
“We had a strong season,” he said. “We came out of it well and only lost two games.”
Caroline Cotton was the winning pitcher for Concordia Bank and Carly Delaney, and Brooke Runnels recorded extra base hits for the team. For Computer Consultants, Adrianna Rojo and Sara Cockerham had extra base hits and Hailey Ellis finished the game with two hits.
