NATCHEZ — Tropical Storm Bill missed the Miss-Lou entirely, but he’ll still be making a visit by way of the Mississippi River.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the river at Natchez Wednesday, projecting it will reach 49 feet — a foot above flood stage — July 5.

At this point, the river is not expected to rise above that level.

NWS Jackson Hydrologist Marty Pope said heavy rains in the Upper Mississippi River  Valley and the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill, which dumped heavy rain and caused flooding in some parts of Texas this week, have driven the flood protections.

“(The storm) is additional rainfall that is going up the Ohio River Valley, and we are showing three to six inches there in the next 72 hours,” Pope said. “All of that combined together should push the river above flood stage at Cairo, Ill., and that will translate down there (at Natchez) as well.”

While flood-stage waters do not directly impact most of the Miss-Lou, a few areas are impacted.

Thornburg Lake Road in Anna’s Bottom in Northern Adams County — where some agricultural interests are located — starts to take on water at 43 feet, while at 44 feet areas around Lake Mary are inundated.

At 45 feet, some buildings in the Wilkinson County community of Fort Adams are impacted by the floodwaters. The Concordia Parish areas of Deer Park and Minorca are likewise affected by the high water prior to flood stage.

The former Belwood Country Club near the Natchez-Adams County Port takes on water at 47 feet. Carthage Point Road, which is near the Belwood property, is likewise impacted at that point.
