Hancock to host skills camp

VIDALIA — Vidalia High School head football coach Jeff Hancock noticed something missing in the Miss-Lou, and is hoping he has the solution for local athletes.

“Our area is not heavily trafficked by recruiters,” Hancock said. “And we have a lot of young talent here.”

Hancock’s plan — to host a camp and invite connections he made in the college coaching world to not only teach local youth the fundamentals of football, but also to evaluate them with a recruiter’s eye.

“This is something I want to start doing every year,” Hancock said. “I want to take advantage of the friends I’ve made that have coached or do coach in college and get them down here for three days to teach the fundamentals and evaluate the kids.”

Hancock also wanted to make sure players weren’t pushed away by price.

“I’m not in this for the money,” Hancock said. “We are only going to charge $20, just to help get the coaches a place to stay.”

Hancock said his main goal of the camp is simple — get kids to show up.

“My concern is everybody is so worried about kids getting recruited and all that and it may steer kids away, but we’ve got a lot of young talent,” Hancock said. “We are going to teach them something and give them a chance to be evaluated.

I may not know much, but I know what a good camp is and needs to be.”

Hancock said he will have coaches from all levels including Division II, III and NAIA.

The camp will go three days and cover both offense and defense, as well as technical drills.

“We are going to start with an offensive and then a defensive session on the first day,” Hancock said. “Then the next day will be a full day of two offensive and two defensive sessions, and we will also take some time to do testing and evaluating and teaching kids how to run the tests. A lot of kids don’t know how to run drills, and a lot of the things they can learn will improve their times.”

The camp will be held at the sports complex in Vidalia.
