NATCHEZ — For the second straight game this week, Trinity Episcopal jumped out to a huge lead after two innings of play.
However, the result was much different the second time around.
Led by Katie Steele’s one-hitter, a much better effort from the defense behind her and several players stepping up at the plate, the Lady Saints rolled to a 14-2 win over the Porter’s Chapel Lady Eagles Thursday afternoon at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex.
Unlike against Brookhaven Academy, which rallied from a 9-0 deficit only to lose 12-11 on Monday afternoon, Porter’s Chapel would have no such luck. In fact, the game ended due to the 12-run-after-four-innings mercy rule after Trinity Episcopal scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“I thought that it was our most complete game of the year. All facets of our team were where they needed to be at this time of the season,” Lady Saints head coach Chris Hutchins said.
Steele gave up just a single to the Lady Eagles, struck out four and walked three. Porter’s Chapel’s only two runs came in the top of the third inning. Trinity’s defense committed just two errors.
Trinity (2-3) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and five in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Randa Morace belted two triples and went 3-for-4 and Ashleigh Williams went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.
Also going 2-for-3 for the Lady Saints were Caitlyn Upton and Mary Catherine Wilkerson.
“Katie pitched well, our defense was solid and we hit the ball up and down the lineup,” Hutchins said. “I thought we played well as a team. I think the girls are gaining confidence in learning how to win.”
Trinity will next play at the Amite School Center Tournament in Liberty. Its first game of the day will be against Central Hinds Academy at 10:25 a.m.
Silliman-Centreville game postponed
CENTREVILLE — Thursday night’s MAIS District 5-AA showdown between the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats and the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers was rained out.
Because it is a district game, it will be played later in the season. However, Centreville head coach Mark Mann said no new date has yet been announced.
Centreville will next play in the Amite School Center Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Tigers’ first game will be against Copiah Academy at 9 a.m.
