MEADVILLE — Franklin County High School is coming off a peculiar win against Taylorsville High School last Friday.

The Bulldogs won 24-19 in a contest where the only points scored came in the second quarter.

Franklin County (3-2) scored first in the second, and then watched as Taylorsville scored three touchdowns in a little over three minutes. The Bulldogs scored two more times after that, taking the 24-19 lead into the half.

“We finished off a couple of drives in the second quarter, and didn’t finish them off in the other quarters,” Franklin County head coach Trent Hammond said.

“There were three instances when we got inside the 10-yard line and didn’t score because of turnovers. We haven’t done a good job protecting the football.”

Hammond said he felt good about his defense going into the half last Friday despite the three quick scoring plays.

“We didn’t really change anything (at halftime),” Hammond said. “There were no changes that needed to be made. We gave up big plays and just didn’t tackle well.

“We felt that the kids just had to keep playing hard in the second half and keep using the same game plan that we had going into the game. In the second half, we wound up finishing plays instead of missing tackles.”

This week, practices have been hampered due to weather, Hammond said.

“We had a monsoon (Tuesday), so hopefully we don’t have to deal with that again (today),” Hammond said.

“We had a good day Monday. I always tell my kids that you have to win Monday through Thursday before you can win on Friday.”

Hammond said his defense would have to continue to play well against a speedy Mendenhall High School team.

“They run a spread, wide open offense,” Hammond said. “They have a couple of extremely fast kids at quarterback, receiver and running back. They also have a big offensive line.”

Mendenhall hasn’t had the season it wanted to so far, Hammond said, because its been victimized by turnovers.

“They’ve been fumbling the football, and they’re a 4A team (that have played) against 5A or 6A teams so far this season, and you can’t make those kinds of mistakes against higher classifications. I think we’re the first 3A team they’ve faced this year.”

Hammond also complemented Mendenhall’s defensive line.

“They have the best nose guard I’ve probably seen in a long, long time,” Hammond said.

“Regardless of how the game’s playing out, it seems like he wins against every center they play against this year. He has a motor that never stops.”

Two important things have to happen if the Bulldogs are going to play well Friday, Hammond said.

“We have to eliminate the turnovers, and our special teams are going to have to do a better job. We can’t continue to allow kick returns.”
