NATCHEZ — Adams County’s sitting state senator has been named as a potential witness in the trial of the man accused of breaking into a nursing home and taking photos of U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran’s late wife.
District 37 Sen. Melanie Sojourner has been named as a possible prosecution witness in the case against Clayton Kelly, 29, the political blogger who was arrested after he allegedly photographed Rose Cochran — who suffered from dementia for a number of years — in her bed.
The photos Kelly allegedly took were used in an online video in which Kelly questioned Cochran’s commitment to his marriage.
Sojourner said the first time she heard she was on the list of potential witnesses was when a reporter called her Monday evening.
“I have not been contacted by the prosecution and I have not had any correspondence from them, so I did not know I was listed,” she said. “I was told they might list any name they might come up with — I have been told it was a long list. I have not even seen it.”
Sen. Cochran is also included in the list of potential witnesses, as is Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler.
Sojourner was the campaign manager for state District 42 Sen. Chris McDaniel, who was challenging Cochran for his Washington seat, at the time of Kelly’s arrest. Shortly after the suspect was booked in May 2014, she called Cochran’s campaign and said Kelly’s actions were not associated with the McDaniel campaign.
Sojourner said Tuesday she was “more than happy to do anything I can to make sure justice is served.”
“If I can be of any help to the prosecution, I will be more than happy to do so and share any information I have, but that is really limited,” she said. “I have never met Clayton Kelly, never had any contact or communication with him, and my knowledge is very limited.”
Rose Cochran died in December. Sen. Cochran married a long-time aide, Kay Webber, in late May.
