NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department is investigating a burglary that occurred at The Donut Shop on John R. Junkin Drive Sunday morning, where an empty mailbox safe was stolen.

Natchez Police officer Anthony Godbold responded to the activated alarm with K-9 Cyrax and discovered that the back door was forced open.

After discovering a trail of footprints behind the store, K-9 Cyrax began to track for fresh human odor, according to reports.

Godbold and K-9 Cyrax discovered a black cloth.

The Donut Shop’s manager, Mary Tyson, arrived at the scene and discovered the mailbox safe was missing, but told officers there was no money inside.

According to reports, Tyson began playing back the security cameras where she discovered at approximately 12:11 a.m. the doors being forced open and saw a male suspect enter the building.

The male had on a black T-shirt with a white logo on the back, black shorts and a black cloth covering his face.

The suspect was followed by a female, who also had on all black.

Godbold said Tyson could not identify the suspects because of their faces being covered but stated one may have been a former employee because they knew exactly where the safe was.

“We recovered some evidence that we discovered and currently working on getting the suspects identified,” Natchez Police Lt. Craig Godbold said.

A Natchez Police officer made contact with a witness at Circle K gas station, who stated that a white male and female, wearing all black, entered the store to purchase beer.

The witness stated the male had a white logo on the back of his shirt.
