NATCHEZ — The Boys and Girls Club of the Miss-Lou has decided to “go green” today, but not in the manner expected.

The Boys and Girls Club, together with Isle of Capri and Walmart, will host a roadblock fundraiser today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Main and Commerce streets, board member Jennifer Ogden Combs said.

“We’re going to be out there with our Boys and Girls Club shirts asking for donations,” Combs said. “We’ll also be giving out information about the club.”

Combs said the roadblock fundraiser is a precursor to the club’s seventh-annual golf tournament fundraiser on Friday at the Beau Pré Country Club.

Registration and lunch is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the shotgun start for the three-man scramble is at 1 p.m. This year’s hole-in-one prize is a Dodge truck donated by Heritage Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep.

The golf tournament is one of two major fundraisers the Boys and Girls Club hosts annually. A Steak ‘n’ Steak fund-raiser dinner is at the end of the school year recognizing youth academic achievements, Combs said.

A non-profit agency, the Boys and Girls Club of the Miss-Lou was founded in 2001 and provides after-school and summer programming to youth ages 6-18.

Combs said the economic downturn has dealt a serious blow to club donations.

“The economy has been tough for everybody, but certainly the non-profits have really suffered,” Combs said. “We really have to redefine and re-examine our funding situation, and look at how do we best fill the needs of children and families in the community.”

Combs said contributors to the fundraisers will see their money put to work.”

“The funds that are donated locally stay local,” Combs said. “They go to benefit our kids in the Miss-Lou.
