JACKSON — Adams County Christian School’s Trey Fleming had already recorded a time that would’ve broken the MAIS Class AA state record in the 300 hurdles. But Saturday, Fleming officially put his name in the record books, breaking the record with a time of 39.84 seconds and capturing a state title.

Fleming wasn’t the only ACCS athlete on top, though. The Rebels finished with four state championships to their name, and even broke another state record in the 800-meter relay.

“This was really big,” ACCS track and field coach Matthew Freeman said. “Trey had been talking about it non-stop and he was so excited. He couldn’t wait to go out there and break that record. The relay record, they just got out there, had perfect handoffs and were rolling.”

Sam Butler, Fleming, Shaverick Williams and Lester Wells made up the relay team that broke the record and also made up the 400-meter relay team, which won state as well.

Fleming found his name atop the leaderboard again later in the day with a time of 51.6 in the 400 meter dash, which earned him a state championship, and his teammate, Wells, was able to take third place in in the 100-meter dash.

ACCS finished third overall in the meet, just ten points behind state champion Centreville.

Natchez High dominates in South State

GULFPORT — For the first time in his long coaching career, Larry Wesley has a south state championship in boys and girls track and field in the same year.

“I’ve always been able to win one, but not the other,” he said. “It feels great to win both at the same time, especially with the competition.”

The Natchez High girls racked up 118 points, while the boys posted a score of 115 to capture the south state titles.

Natchez will now send eight girls and nine boys on to the state meet.

Zyaire Ewing put on a show for Natchez, winning both her events the high jump and shot put.

Shamarra Grover in the 300 meter hurdles and Ernesha Chatman in the long jump, also took first place in their events on the girls side.

For the boys, Daryl Jones had a solid individual day winning the two-mile race and taking home second in the mile. Freddie Singleton also performed well finishing second in the triple jump, third in the long jump, third in the 200-meter and was a part of the 4×1 relay, which finished first.

The state track meet will take place Friday in Pearl.

Caston takes fourth

JACKSON — Kevontaye Caston found himself in an unfavorable position at the MAIS Class A state track meet.

Caston, who ran the 100-meter dash, was sick and also suffering from a hamstring injury.

“He’s been under the weather and having to run through it,” Trinity track and field coach Zach Rogel said. “He went out there and competed and was only off the podium by a tenth of a second. You could tell, though, it wasn’t 100 percent Kevontaye.”
