NATCHEZ — For the first time this season, Natchez High School committed no errors en route to a 4-2 playoff win against Picayune High School.
Facing elimination, down 1-0 in the opening round series of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs, the Bulldogs had to win to keep their season alive.
“It was the perfect time to do that,” Natchez head coach Dan Smith said.
Both Smith and former Natchez High standout Nook Logan said the win marks the Bulldogs first playoff win since 1998.
Shavoke Herrington got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching seven innings and allowing only two runs on seven hits.
“He did well, but you have to give it up to the defense,” Smith said. “He threw strikes, which is key. And the defense behind him made plays.”
Meanwhile, offensively, Darrick Lewis created the spark for the Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 on the day, including a double and a home run. Lewis suffered from a wrist injury in the latter part of the season, and Smith said he was a much-needed shot in the arm today, in his second game back with the team.
“He actually hit the ball very well Thursday night in the loss, as well,” Smith said. “But with him back in there, we shuffled the lineup up, and he had a huge day for us.”
With the win, Natchez is now 8-11 on the season and will travel to play Picayune for the rubber match of the best-of-three series Monday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
